Chairman Sam Yu, as well as @Charles Brooke and Charlotte Chan from the Executive Committee, highlighted the key potential areas for strategic partnership between Hong Kong and Saudi Arabia, including opportunities for Hong Kong-domiciled funds, ETFs, fundraising vehicles, pensions development, knowledge sharing and talent exchange.
They all agreed the trip was an eye-opening experience, paving the way for future dialogues and engagements bridging Hong Kong and the Middle East. 🕌💡
HKIFA is delighted to host a webinar on Nov 26 re SFC’s recent circular on deficiencies in managing private funds and discretionary accounts. It was well attended with over 120 participants.
Anthony Wong and Kelvin Fung, representatives from SFC’s Intermediaries Supervision representatives department, shared the key takeaways of the circular, while Winnie Cheung, Vice-chairman of HKIFA’s Regulatory Subcommittee, presented the industry practices on handling conflicts of interest and information disclosure to investors.
The speakers emphasized the importance of governance, robust policies and measures to comply with regulatory requirements – a good reminder for all asset managers to review the existing arrangements and controls.

HKIFA was pleased to have Jingyuan Shi, Partner at Simmons & Simmons, to share updates about China’s cross-border data transfer rules.
Published in March by the Cyberspace Administration of China, the Provisions to Promote and Regulate Cross-Border Data Flows are more business-friendly in general. Jingyuan gave an overview of the new rules, and discussed the implications for fund managers.
Amid the growing interest in investing in India, HKIFA invited an Indian law firm to share updates on the recent regulatory development in India and the implications for fund managers, particularly on the disclosure requirements set out by the Securities Exchange Board of India for foreign portfolio investors (FPI).
Cyril Shroff and L Viswanathan, Managing Partner and Partner at Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas respectively, provided an overview on FPI, and the requirements on the identification of beneficial owners.

The latest HKIFA x PWMA webinar series featured Dr. Guo Peiyuan from SynTao Green Finance and China SIF, who shared the findings based on his research report “Top 10 Trends of Responsible Investment in China 2024”, and the broader ESG landscape in China. He also discussed the implications of the new sustainability reporting guidelines for listed companies, which were released by the China stock exchanges for public consultation in February 2024.

Representatives from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and the Securities and Futures Commission provided a demonstration for our members on the recently launched greenhouse gas emission tools last week.
Developed by the HKUST and the Green and Sustainable Finance Cross-Agency Steering Group, the tools help address the ESG data gaps by enabling users, such as small and medium-size enterprises and financial institutions, to calculate or estimate greenhouse gas emissions.

In recent years, China has accelerated the opening-up of China’s financial service sector, releasing a series of new policies and guidelines to provide foreign financial institutions easier access to China market. With the further deepening of financial reform and opening-up, a series of foreign financial institutions continue to increase their investment and business in Beijing. Beijing has also further promoted the facilitation of cross-border investment through QDLP and QFLP pilot program.
To enable foreign institutions to better understand China and in particular, Beijing’s foreign investment implementation policies, Beijing Private Equity Association (北京基金业协会) has lined up Hong Kong Venture Capital and Private Equity Association (香港创业及私募投资协会) and HKIFA to jointly hold Beijing QDLP, QFLP Pilot Program Seminar.
